Light and Shadow, Hearts in Harmony: ‘Beijing International Film Festival Overseas Screening’ Held in Bangkok

On November 7, 2024, during the 18th Bangkok “Chinese Film Festival,” the “Beijing International Film Festival International Screening” debuted in Bangkok, drawing significant attention.

Reflecting on this year’s 14th Beijing International Film Festival, the “Beijing Panorama” section was a resounding success, receiving widespread acclaim. Featuring 16 sections and over 250 carefully curated cinematic masterpieces from film history, the screenings were held across 27 cinemas and theaters, presenting more than 800 shows to global movie enthusiasts, creating a vibrant feast of light and shadow.

This time, the “Beijing Panorama” journeyed to the beautiful city of Bangkok, continuing this ever-lasting celebration of cinema.

At the opening ceremony of the “Beijing International Film Festival International Screening,” Li Xiaoming, Deputy Secretary-General of the Beijing International Film Festival Organizing Committee, delivered a keynote speech. He highlighted two standout films: Chang An, celebrated for its rich Chinese aesthetic value, and G For Gap, which focuses on the realities of contemporary Chinese family life. Both films captivated the audience’s attention.

The animated film Chang An, set against the historical backdrop of ancient Chang’an, not only showcases the grandeur of a flourishing Chang’an but also conveys the profound essence of traditional Chinese culture. Meanwhile, G For Gap, which won three major awards in the “Tiantan Award” competition at this year’s Beijing International Film Festival, offers a thoughtful exploration of the realities faced by today’s Chinese youth. The film features nuanced emotional storytelling alongside an in-depth examination of contemporary societal issues.

Li Xiaoming remarked that these two films, with their narratives spanning both ancient and modern times, highlight the innovative transformation and development of China’s rich traditional culture. He expressed confidence that the films would resonate deeply with young audiences around the world. He also noted the rapid growth of Thailand’s film industry in the new century. This year, the Thai film How to Make Millions Before Grandma Dies‎ sparked strong emotional connections and cultural resonance in both Thailand and China, becoming a bridge of friendship between the two nations. Looking ahead, Li expressed hope that more outstanding Thai films would grace the big screen at the Beijing International Film Festival, showcasing the unique charm of Thai cinema to audiences in China and across the globe.

The “Beijing International Film Festival International Screening” builds a cinematic bridge for cultural exchange between China and Thailand. Through the diverse languages of film, it fosters creativity and mutual understanding while planting the seeds of hope for the future of cinema in both nations. By embarking on this shared journey, the two countries aim to craft even more remarkable chapters of cinematic collaboration.
